Oct 20, 2026
Adventures of a Chicano Spanish Teacher chronicles more than three decades of travel, cultural discovery, and curiosity spanning Mexico, Guatemala, Jamaica, Alaska, Peru, and Palau.
Los Angeles, California Oct 19, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - Retired educator and travel memoirist Sonny Morin shares more than three decades of exploration in Adventures of a Chicano Spanish Teacher, Mexico and Beyond, a collection shaped by language, history, culture, and discovery.
Beginning with journeys undertaken during Morin's undergraduate years, the memoir follows adventures that continued throughout his life. Its stories span Mexico, Guatemala, Jamaica, Alaska, Peru, and Palau, placing readers inside each destination through recollection and an action-oriented narrative style.
The book is organized into three parts. The first centers on Palenque and travels through Mexico and Guatemala, including visits to Agua Azul, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Oaxaca City, Puerto Ángel, Flores, and Tikal. These accounts reveal sites, regional traditions, encounters, and the practical realities of traveling through culturally rich landscapes.
The second part explores Cozumel and excursions across the Mexican mainland. Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Chichén Itzá, and Holbox provide the settings for experiences involving history, coastal life, diving, and discovery. The final section expands the journey to additional destinations, presenting adventures in Jamaica, Alaska, Peru, and Palau.
Sonny Morin's perspective reflects his identity as a Chicano educator and his dedication to Spanish language and culture. Raised in a South Texas town, he earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Texas State University and spent his career teaching Spanish in Central Texas. His travels extended the curiosity of his classroom into the world.
Since retiring in 2017, Morin has continued writing and is developing a second book about his years as a teacher and the students who shaped them.
Adventures of a Chicano Spanish Teacher, Mexico and Beyond offers an immersive journey for travel enthusiasts, educators, and culturally curious readers.
