Silicon Labs Sunshine Run Sets Fundraising Record

The 2017 edition of the Silicon Labs Sunshine Run was enjoyed on Sunday, May 7th by over 2,200 participants that helped raise nearly $45,000 for the Austin Sunshine Camps, cementing its position as Austin's Most Charitable 5K/10K Event.

The 2017 edition of the Silicon Labs Sunshine Run delivered on its namesake with over 2,000 runners enjoying a sunny morning along the shores of Lady Bird Lake while raising a record level of charitable funds for the Austin Sunshine Camps.

The race took place on Sunday, May 7th beginning at Vic Mathias Shores, crossing the South First Street Bridge, and then continuing west onto Cesar Chavez Blvd before returning back along the same path.

The men’s overall 10K winner this year was Alfred Kipgulat with a time of 31:03, trailed by local standouts JT Sullivan in 32:03 and James Greenham in 36:32.

The women’s overall 10K winner was University of Texas standout Katie Ruhala with a time of 38.56, followed by Krysten Tucker in 39:26 and Tammy Bogle in 40:54.

In the 5K race, the men’s winner was Austin’s own Steven Hernandez with a time of 16:32 and the women’s winner was Jennifer Harney with a time of 18:41.

Winners of the Nulo Pet Food’s Fastest Dog in Austin 5K dragged owners Cate Barrett and Nicholas Malaya to the finish line to win the female and male divisions, respectively. Each dog receives a year’s supply of Nulo pet food.

Sunday morning offered perfect conditions as temperatures began cool and runners were finished prior to the heat and humidity of the day setting in.

After the race, runners enjoyed a large exposition area with local vendors, food trucks, and sports & fitness companies. Mr. Sunshine took pictures with kids and the day was capped off with an awards ceremony. Medals were awarded to the top 3 finishers in each age category for both male and female divisions.

“The weather today was perfect. Runners and walkers alike had a terrific time. This is such a great community-building experience and we are proud to achieve this visibility for the Austin Sunshine Camps,” said Jace Campbell, race committee volunteer and owner of PrimeFirst Inspections in Austin, Texas.

The real winner of the day was the Austin Sunshine Camps, the event’s sole beneficiary whose mission is to provide deserving kids in Austin with a free weeklong summer camp experience. Without the organization of this 100% volunteer coordinated race by the Young Men’s Business League, thousands of kids would not otherwise have the opportunity for this camp experience.

The 2018 Silicon Labs Sunshine Run is already scheduled for Sunday, May 6, 2018. Registration is not open, but signup on their website to be notified when early bird registration begins.
