MedicareWire Turns to Medium.com to Reach Baby Boomers Aging into Medicare

Nov 18, 2019

As the Medicare beneficiary population grows from 64 to 80 million over the next decade, MedicareWire expands into new online channels to reach online savvy seniors aging into Medicare.

Today, MedicareWire announced its plan to immediately begin syndicating its library of original content, including health plan reviews, stories, news, and plan benefit information on Medium.com. Medium is a popular platform that allows publishers to directly publish content, photos, audio, and video. Users comment on and discuss popular stories, and the platform automatically figures out which articles are most relevant to each reader. Publishers can link their Twitter and Facebook IDs to Medium and the platform will then figure out which of those users are also on Medium and connect them automatically.

David Bynon, the company’s founder, reported “Since 2012, MedicareWire has produced over 1 million pages of information related to the Medicare program, private Medicare plans, Medicare policy, and news. We are proud to help tens of thousands of Baby Boomers each month — getting their Medicare benefits for the first time — who need the information to make the best health plan decisions for their personal situation. Expanding our content to the Medium platform will help us reach even more people as the program expands to serve an additional 16 million people in the coming decade.”

In 2019, most of the 64 million people with Medicare benefits are covered by Medicare’s original private fee-for-service (PFFS) system, but more than one-third (34%) are enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans. Since 2010, the number of beneficiaries enrolled in private Medicare health plans has nearly doubled from 11.1 million to 22.0 million in 2019. The Medicare program is expected to grow to nearly 80 million beneficiaries as the bulk of the Baby Boomer generation ages into their Medicare benefits. Many of these people have a Health Savings Account (HSA) through their employer and are looking for the same option in Medicare.

“The Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) is similar to an employer HSA, but they are not yet available in all 50 states,” claims Bynon. “I’m confident that more insurance carriers will begin offering Medicare Advantage MSAs over the next few years.” According to ahip.org, approximately 22 million people have a Health Savings Account that’s coupled to a consumer-direct health plan (CDHP).

Medicare Advantage is just one way beneficiaries get the coverage they need. About eight in 10 beneficiaries in original Medicare have some type of supplemental insurance, including employer-sponsored insurance (30%), Medigap (29%), and Medicaid (22%). Gaining access to supplemental Medicare insurance information is critical for decision-making. This is particularly true of people in need of a Medicare Special Need Plan (SNP). About ten percent of all beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Advantage have an SNP plan. Most are dual-eligible for Medicare and Medicaid.

“One of my biggest complaints about the Medicare insurance industry is how agencies and lead generators try to squeeze seniors out of their personal information before they will give them access to basic plan information,” says Bynon. “It’s a shameful practice that needs to be outlawed by CMS.”

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulates how agents can sell Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, through a Scope of Appointment form, but they don’t regulate online lead generation practices. MedicareWire openly publishes all plan information without restrictions.
