In regards to his educational background, Dr. Garrett graduated from high school at Memphis University School and then received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended Vanderbilt School of Medicine, followed by a residency in general and cardiothoracic surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He returned to Memphis to complete a residency in vascular surgery at the University of Tennessee.

One of the leading experts in his field, he is board-certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS).
