Country star Kane Brown countersues producer over contract

Mar 19, 2019

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Country star Kane Brown and Atlanta-based producer Polow Da Don are embroiled in a contract dispute that has both sides claiming they are owed money. The Grammy-nominated producer, whose real name is Jamal Jones, sued Brown in February claiming breach of contract, saying he has not been paid under the terms of a 2015 agreement and asked for damages in excess of $75,000. Brown's attorneys responded on Monday with a countersuit, claiming the producer has made millions off Brown's success based on a fraudulent contract and misled him about their agreement. Brown is seeking unspecified damages. An...

Dick Dale, King of Surf Guitar, 'Miserlou' composer, is dead

Mar 19, 2019

LOS ANGELES — Dick Dale, whose pounding, blaringly loud power-chord instrumentals on songs like "Miserlou" and "Let's Go Trippin'" earned him the title King of the Surf Guitar, has died at age 83. His former bassist Sam Bolle says Dick Dale passed away Saturday night. No other details were available. Dale liked to say it was he and not the Beach Boys who invented surf music — and some critics have said he was right. An avid surfer, Dale started building a devoted Los Angeles fan base in the late 1950s with repeated appearances at Newport Beach's old Rendezvous Ballroom....

Where eagles flirt: A DC tale of love, loss and raccoons

Mar 19, 2019

WASHINGTON — It's a tale with everything you'd need for a soap opera: star-crossed lovers, a stable relationship threatened by younger suitors, pregnancy and loss, and a hungry raccoon. Washingtonians, along with a global community of eagle-watchers, have been transfixed this winter by Liberty and Justice, bald eagles who've nested and raised eaglets together for 14 years on the grounds of the city's police academy. Their annual mating ritual, egg-laying and hatching process normally draws thousands of viewers to a special eagle cam. But this year has been unusually dramatic, with twists and turns that became headline news outside the...

R. Kelly case poses challenge: Separating artist from anthem

Mar 19, 2019

DETROIT — When the recordings of the basic track arrived in Detroit from Chicago, Paul Riser Sr. knew it was time to get to work. But the orchestral arranger also knew he had something special to work with. "It hit me the same way like everyone else in the world: The lyrics are so simple, the melody is so clear, the chord pattern is wonderful," said Riser, a Motown Records alum who wrote the orchestra parts and directed the strings and woodwind musicians for "I Believe I Can Fly." ''That song came from his heart: That's the other side of...

Judge allows courtroom cameras for trial of R. Kelly

Mar 19, 2019

CHICAGO — Cameras will be allowed in the courtroom during the trial and pretrial hearings in R. Kelly's sexual abuse case, but the R&B singer's accusers can't be photographed or filmed without their consent, a judge ruled Friday. The Grammy-winning singer didn't attend the brief hearing in Cook County Circuit Court, but his lawyer did. Associate Judge Lawrence Flood said cameras will be allowed going forward, beginning with the next hearing on March 22. He also said two accusers have already said they don't want to be photographed or filmed in court. Kelly, 52, has pleaded not guilty to 10...
